A Beginners Guide to Triathlon: Triathlon Distances

Introduction:

Triathlons are a multifaceted challenge, encompassing swimming, cycling, and running. The diversity within the sport makes it ideal for beginners as well as seasoned athletes seeking the ultimate endurance event. From the rapid bursts of a Super Sprint to the formidable tests of endurance in a Full Distance triathlon, there will be a triathlon to suit athletes of all type.

The order of ‘difficulty’ very much depends on who you are, I found my last Sprint Triathlon more exhausting than my last 70.3 (we will be covering this under a separate post), so the order below is purely in terms of length and the ‘who for’ is a very general guide. With the correct training most people can complete most distances.

The Main Five Triathlon Distances

  • Why do one?: With a more substantial swim, bike, and run, the Olympic triathlon demands not only speed but also sustained effort throughout the entirety of the race.

Half-Distance Triathlon: The Middle Ground
